What is a civil engineer?
A civil engineer is a person who has the training and ability to design, repair, and maintain physical and natural structures. Civil engineers are needed for work of all kinds — from designing a superhighway, to monitoring urban water runoff, to planning traffic flow for a housing development.

What types of civil engineering are there?
Civil engineer is such a vast field that it is divided into many sub-disciplines. Civil engineering is usually considered as a broad term, much as "doctor" describes a role with many specialties and sub-disciplines. Civil engineers may specialize in municipal engineering, environmental engineering, materials engineering, coastal engineering, traffic engineering, construction engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, and a variety of other specialties.

What kind of training does a civil engineer need?
General civil engineering begins with a four-year accredited degree, usually with a major in "civil engineering." Many engineers also go on for additional specific training in their selected sub-discipline. In order to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng), an engineer must register with the Engineering Council, hold a master's degree, have professional experience, and pass a battery of tests. Chartered engineers are usually eligible for management positions and a higher pay grade.

What kind of a career is the civil engineer?
Civil engineers are responsible for some of the greatest achievements of human beings, from ancient to modern times. They designed each of the seven wonders of the ancient world, built the tallest skyscrapers, planned the biggest dams, and in general ensure that the world is built safely and efficiently. In a word, civil engineers make the world go round.
