Aeronautical engineering falls under the larger category of aerospace engineering, which has two main branches. Aeronautics deals with aircraft, while astronautics deals with spacecraft. Much of the work can be similar in nature, although the special requirements of space versus the earth's atmosphere create natural differences.
 
An advanced degree is required to work in aeronautics; however, due to the collaborative nature of the work, specialties in mechanical, electrical and software engineering are possible as well as degrees in aerospace or aeronautical engineering.

The work of aeronautical engineers is highly technical in nature. These skilled individuals design and develop new aviation technologies with the goal of improving aircraft performance and efficiency. Aeronautical engineers also build defense systems, such as missiles or unmanned surveillance drones. The work may involve long hours and a high amount of stress as the safety of any type of aircraft is crucial.

Numerous elements combine to deliver overall aircraft functionality, and aeronautical engineers often specialize in certain types of aircraft, including military jets, helicopters or commercial planes. There is further specialization within each type of aircraft. Aerodynamics, structural design, prototypes, navigation, guidance systems, communications, propulsion and instrumentation are all areas where aeronautical engineers work. Data analysis, design testing and reporting are all important components of the work.

Jobs for aeronautical engineers exist in government agencies, the military and in the private sector. Companies that work on government contracts, the commercial airlines, and companies that supply airlines are a few examples of private opportunities.
